Find Benny Magness Unit Inmates

Benny Magness Unit, formerly North Central Unit, is the Arkansas DOC state prison in Izard County, Arkansas. It is not the county jail, and a Benny Magness Unit inmate lookup uses the state prison search rather than the sheriff's jail roster. The unit holds sentenced Arkansas Division of Correction inmates after court commitment and prison intake. People checking local arrest custody should use the Izard County Detention Facility roster first, while sentenced prison custody belongs in the DOC system.

Benny Magness Prison Overview

Benny Magness Unit is operated by the Arkansas Department of Corrections, Division of Correction, in Calico Rock. Official directions and some older references use North Central, so the former name matters when matching DOC pages, news, and directions to the current facility. The unit is a state prison, not an Izard County Sheriff's Office jail or a short-term holding cell.

The DOC facility page lists the unit as established in 1990, ACA accredited, and located at 10 Prison Circle. It holds sentenced Arkansas DOC inmates. People arrested in Izard County usually start at the Izard County Detention Facility. If a court later sentences a person to the Arkansas Department of Correction and DOC accepts the person into state custody, that person's public lookup moves from the county roster path to the statewide DOC locator.

That distinction prevents a common search error. A current jail booking, bond amount, or new arrest profile is not found through the prison facility page. A sentenced prison record, ADC number, prison facility assignment, and state custody status are not controlled by the sheriff roster. For people in transition, Sheriff Charley Melton's county jail may hold a DOC-sentenced inmate until DOC bed space is available.

Benny Magness Unit Capacity

The official DOC page gives a unit capacity of 800. That capacity belongs to the state prison and should not be added to the Izard County jail's local bed count. The state prison population is managed by DOC classification, transfer, program, and custody procedures, while the county jail population is managed by local detention staff and the sheriff roster.

Look Up Benny Magness Inmates

The correct locator is Arkansas DOC inmate search. The search form lets users search by ADC number, county, last name, first name, facility, gender, offense category, age, and race, with a disclaimer acknowledgment before searching. The facility dropdown includes state facilities and categories that can help separate Benny Magness Unit from county 309 or waiting-list custody; use the county roster instead for current jail custody.

  1. Open the Arkansas DOC inmate search and read the disclaimer prompt.
  2. Search by ADC number if known, or use last name and first name with filters.
  3. Use the facility field if the goal is to confirm assignment to Benny Magness Unit or the former North Central name.
  4. If the person is not found in DOC custody, check the Izard County jail roster or call the jail for local custody status.

The DOC inmate search screenshot is matched to this prison page because lookup for Benny Magness Unit runs through the statewide prison locator, not through the county sheriff roster. The source is the Arkansas DOC inmate search.

The form's county and facility filters can help narrow a search, but a name match should still be checked against the full DOC result. County of conviction, county of origin, and current prison assignment are separate facts.

Call the unit before travel when a visit, form, legal mail delivery, or time-sensitive prison matter is involved.

Benny Magness Visitation Rules

County jail visit rules do not apply at Benny Magness Unit. DOC visitation uses state prison procedures. The DOC mail and money page says visitation forms must be completed and returned to the inmate's assigned unit to the attention of the Unit Visitation Clerk. It also warns not to send those forms to the inmate and not to send them to the Florida digital mail address.

Benny Magness DOC Intake

A state prison does not book street arrests the way a county jail does. DOC admission follows conviction, sentencing, commitment, classification, and transfer. DOC inmate information states that classification manages inmates from conviction to release, and all inmates are placed in Class II status when they arrive. They remain in Class II during the first 60 days at the parent unit on initial assignment.

DOC screening includes custody classification and medical classification. A unit classification committee may later review progress and adjust program assignment, job assignment, classification status, custody level, or other staff-recommended matters. Those prison classification decisions are separate from county booking numbers, county bond fields, and the Izard County jail roster. For local booking records before transfer, the Izard County Detention Facility page covers the sheriff roster path.

Benny Magness Unit Programs

The DOC facility page lists a broad set of education, job-skill, treatment, faith-based, and animal or agriculture programs at Benny Magness Unit. These programs are prison programs for sentenced inmates. They should not be confused with Izard County jail services, where the official research did not locate county GED, reentry, substance-abuse, or commissary program details.

About North Central Name

The former North Central Unit name still appears in directions and may appear in older reports, family notes, court references, or news. The official facility is now Benny Magness Unit. When searching DOC records, directions, or correspondence rules, match the current DOC facility name, the Calico Rock address, and the state prison system rather than assuming that every "North Central" reference is a county jail record.

For people moving from an Izard County case into state custody, timing can be confusing. The sheriff detention page says DOC-sentenced inmates may wait at the county jail until DOC bed space is available. During that period, the sheriff roster and jail phone may still be the best custody confirmation. After DOC transfer, the state locator and prison unit rules control lookup, mail, money, visitation, and classification.

Note: Confirm the current facility before mailing, sending money, or traveling, because county jail and DOC rules are different.
